YTMovies-Lite review

Combining a movie database with a video player, YTMovies-Lite brings you a rich selection of full-length films from YouTube, enabling you to browse them by category, rating, or director and to watch them with a rudimentary but functional video player. Unfortunately, many movies are either old or of low quality, and the app itself suffers from ads and technical issues.

Pros

Lots of movies: YTMovies-Lite features over 22,000 movies with subtitles, and while the majority of them are low budget, you'll still find lots of popular titles, including MGM classics and animations.

Browsing modes: Browsing through movie categories or quickly viewing all the works by one director turns out to be easier with this app than with the official YouTube app, since all of these are grouped together and readily available through a collapsible menu. The Recent, Trending, and Most Watched categories make the discovery of new movies easy.

Cons

Poor UI: Although the neat grid display shows the poster for each title as well as ratings and reviews, making it easy for you to search for worthwhile movies, the interface on the whole feels clumsy and often lags or freezes. Besides, the search tool is hidden behind the default app settings button, the interface is saturated with ads and pop-ups, and you have to manually tap to view the next or the previous 15 titles in any given category.

Playback issues: Not only does the video player lack the hand gestures for controlling playback, such as swiping for fast-forwarding that full-fledged players have, but it's also slow and takes a long time to buffer videos. To make matters worse, the video quality is often poor, even if the title is listed as available in HD.

Bottom Line

While faulty in many ways, YTMovies-Lite deserves credit for trying to bring together all full-length movies from YouTube. If you're a film buff and don't find ads distracting, you may want to try this app, though it will probably not last long on your device.
