    Zappos says customer database hacked

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Online shoe seller Zappos.com says a hacker may have accessed the personal information of up to 24 million customers.

Customers' credit card and payment information was not stolen, but names, phone numbers, email addresses, billing and shipping addresses, the last four digits from credit cards and more may have been accessed in the attack, according to an email that CEO Tony Hsieh sent on Sunday to employees.

Zappos is contacting customers by email and urging them to change their passwords.

Zappos said the hacker gained access to its internal network and systems through one of the company's servers in Kentucky. Zappos is based in Las Vegas. It is owned by Seattle-based Amazon.com Inc.

"We've spent over 12 years building our reputation, brand, and trust with our customers," Hsieh said in his email. "It's painful to see us take so many steps back due to a single incident. I suppose the one saving grace is that the database that stores our customers' critical credit card and other payment data was not affected or accessed."

So compared to Sony, Mastercard and Visa getting hacked this is nothing. At least they told people and didnt try to hide it or cover it up for a bit

Even if they did get CREDIT Card Numbers, consumers are protected with them. There is not as much protection with DEBIT Cards.

Do you want to put more on a Cloud? You music, pictures, documents? Keep it on your computer and use software to access YOUR computer and not Cloud. Cloud computing is the worst infrastructure.
      • C 4 mths ago
Cloud technology was developed and promoted as safe. Common, do you really think the government and hackers will access your data from Cloud? That will never happens, it is pure paranoia ;o)

        Sorry for my sarcasm.

Cheap IT is not good and good IT is not cheap.
Every time I have been called to straighten out IT systems it has mostly been after a catastrophe and the cause in the end was always the same CHEAP, CHEAPER, CHEAPEST IT at every turn in the road. If not by the corporation whose IT systems went crunch then it was the contractors who handled the configurations. Just because a corporation pays good money to a consulting firm to handle IT issues does not mean things are being done correctly. In the end, corporations and businesses are most always far better off having their own IT teams on board running things.

Exactly Melee, however, instead of keeping their own IT corporations outsource them thinking about short-term cost savings. As you clearly stated, they ended up paying more in the long run.

Yeah sure your data was safe. My wife had two credit cards with fraudulent charges last week. The common thread was Zappos charges on both. I don't believe for a minute their customer info was safe. I think it's #$%$ and they should offer something to customers who have to go through the pain to get new cards issues, change info with other accounts, etc...

Prepaid cards for on line purchases. No bank. No trouble.

The groups that feel they have to prove some kind of point. Why not just use the knowledge and do something productive instead of destructive?

      • Repent of your wicked ways and you can now be reconcilled to God our Heavenly Father through Jesus Christs Finished Work on the Cross .Jesus took on himself the Full Wrath of God for our sins because all crime or AKA sin must be Judged..so we all are guilty of sin.only 1 sin would keep us from Heaven ,this is the standard of God.but Jesus fullfilled all the law and prophets for us.by simply believeing this message and calling on the name of the Lord you will be saved.for it is by Gods Grace we are saved through faith in Jesus and what he did for us at the cross.John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:Romans 5:1 Therefore, being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.Romans 4:25 He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification .. Romans 5:9-109Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.Give thanks to God for what He and His Son has done for us all.and you will recieve the Holy Spirit of God who is our Comforter leading us to all Truth and leading us Away from sin.He will always be with you.for in Believing you have become a New Creation IN Christ.Born of God in the Spirit of God.This is a FREE GIFT of Eternal Life found only IN Jesus Christ.

I bought shoes from Zappos in once 2004 and I got an email yesterday saying my info was stolen... sucks that they kept my information even though I haven't shopped with them in 8 years.

I shop on Zappoo, There is no doubt they have great customer service and very fast shipping but yet compare to other companies their price is so high. But since online shopping is getting more and more unsafe i decide to shop in store and also this way its way easy to exchange and return purchased item, compare to online.

The most serious cyber crime is by employees. I'm guessing that is the case here.

Don't you just LOVE the convience of buying on-line?
      • James J 4 mths ago
I do. I've used virtual cards online for years with never a problem.
      • Dirk 4 mths ago
Did you not hear that there was credit card fraud before online shopping? Every time you used your card at brick and mortar, you risked someone taking a copy. Still do.
