New Zealand's wayward penguin faces long swim home

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — A young emperor penguin that turned up on a New Zealand beach won't be getting a free ride all the way back to its Antarctic home — but the bird's human friends will at least help it get a little closer.

The penguin — affectionately dubbed Happy Feet — drew intense interest after being spotted on North Island's Peka Peka Beach, about 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) from its natural habitat in Antarctica. The creature's health quickly declined when it began eating sand and sticks, but the bird is beginning to recover.

Wildlife officials have been trying to figure out how the 3-foot (80 centimeter) -tall bird will return home. They initially dismissed the idea of transporting it to Antarctica because of logistical difficulties and the fear that it could transmit infections picked up during its New Zealand vacation to other penguins.

On Wednesday, an advisory group headed by the Department of Conservation decided officials will help the penguin get part of the way home by releasing it into the Southern Ocean, southeast of New Zealand — and letting it swim the rest of the way.

"The reason for not returning the penguin directly to Antarctica is that emperor penguins of this age are usually found north of Antarctica on pack ice and in the open ocean," the department's biodiversity spokesman Peter Simpson said.

The area where it will be released is on the northern edge of the region where young emperor penguins are known to live. Simpson said he was unsure how far the penguin would have to swim before reaching its final destination.

Happy Feet, nicknamed after the 2006 animated movie, was discovered on Peka Peka Beach last week — the first time an emperor penguin has been seen in the wild in New Zealand in 44 years. Experts aren't sure if it's male or female.

The penguin is recovering well at Wellington Zoo, where it underwent a medical procedure on Monday to help flush out the sand it swallowed after apparently mistaking it for snow. Doctors managed to remove about half the sand from its digestive system, and zoo spokeswoman Kate Baker said X-rays showed the penguin was passing the rest of the sand naturally.

The creature appears to be doing well and is being kept in isolation in an air-conditioned room filled with large blocks of ice, Baker said.

"The plan from now on is to let him rest, feed him and X-ray him again on Friday or Saturday to see how much sand has passed," Baker said.

Officials are still hammering out logistics for the penguin's return trip home, and said it won't be released until its health has recovered. Until then, it will remain at the zoo.

Sea World in San Diego has a great Penguin Encounter, send the bird there!

I just checked out the Sea World San Diego penguin encounter webpage, and it does look like a pretty nice place for penguins. Of course, I don't know whether they have even offered to take in "Happy Feet"...
I suppose the logic is that he shouldn't be kept in captivity if he's not injured. He apparently had the strength to swim 2,000 miles, so he must have been strong, though he apparently has a lousy sense of direction and an even lousier sense of what to eat and not eat (sand, sticks...) Yeah, I'm voting for the San Diego zoo.

Dumping him to die. That's nice.

If they insist on dumping him back into the ocean, I hope they take him far enough south to find other penguins, since this one seems to be "directionally challenged."
Personally, I'd prefer the suggestion that "Curly" made about Sea World in San Diego, but it appears that the decisions are being made by Australia's Dept. of Conservation, so they wouldn't consider that option. You remember the DOC? They're the ones who originally recommended leaving the penguin on the beach and "letting nature take its course" because "birds get lost all the time." Obviously, they are best qualified to act in the interests of this particular penguin. :-\

I love animals, nature, etc. But nature is a cruel place and "survival of the fittest" isn't just some overused cliche. It would be a waste of resources to treat every critter that clearly has something wrong with them (naturally). This one made the news, so in the interest of peace it's better to save it than try to get everyone to understand that millions of animals die/are killed each day in the cycle of life.

Mystic Aquarium in CT is the leading authority on Penquins, why didn't they send him there.

I was working on a global needs priority chart, and I couldn't figure where lost penguin recovery ranks. I'm guessing it goes somewhere between providing an Afghan a prosthetic leg and filling the pot hole at 1st Avenue and State, which also happens to costs much less than chartering a 100ft boat to ferry Mr Happy Feet to his deep blue oblivion. What do you think?

YOU KNOW ITS AMAZING HOW AN ANIMAL CAN GET ALL KING OF PEOPLE TOGETHER TO SAVE HIM...BUT WHEN IT COMES TO GETTING ALONG WITH EACH OTHER WE FIGHT...MAYBE WE SHOULD HAVE MORE OF THE HAPPY FEET BETWEEN THE NATIONS SO THAT THEY DONT FIGHT EACH OTHER....SAVE THE LITTLE GUY

This is a bad move! He will not make it someone needs to set up to the plate and help him or find a zoo home for him/her.

Yes, let's save this one penguin. Spend tons of money, get him fattened up, and then pay a crew of people to bravely man a vessel down south. Drop him off on the icecap, and let him breed. Then next year, they can save him and his sand-eating offspring when they return to New Zealand. Before long, we'll have a race of sand-eating penguins that would die off if not for human intervention. (Survival of the fittest, folks.)

What's your take on this matter PETA ?

its gonna die regardless, they know this, so they are just going to put it in the sea, where at least the ittle kids wont know it dies

Meanwhile in important news, there is still a war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Do penguins taste like chicken? I'd be down to find out. Put some hot sauce on that bytch, a cpl pieces of bread, and some blue cheese, and we could find out. Damn, I'm hungry now...

unsure how far the penguin would have to swim before reaching its final destination.... How can we now say that its a happy ending for Happy Feet if this will be his faith.
    • Icebox  •  11 mths ago
Please review your option again. What happen to the offer of lift home February next year? The offer of San Diego Zoo? Did we consider that it can get lost again if we just release it? Did we consider that the penguin can be underweight again because of long swim back home? Why not release it near the pack of penguin can that be done? Please consider his safety and high chance that he can really go back home not just to release it that way without certainty of what will be his faith.

Put a tracker on Happy Feet. At least we'll know how long it takes a killer whale to swallow him or her up.
    • Anselma Paonessa  •  11 mths ago
What a useless country, first they pamper him, now they want to toss him back into the sea as if he had his own GPS. Not very smart!

Happy Feet shouldn't have problem paying for his ticket home. The Happy Feet sequel is out this coming November.
