ON World’s recently published report finds that the diversity of IEEE 802.15.4 along with the evolution of Internet addressable smart objects is expanding the market opportunities for wireless sensing and control from the smart home to industrial automation.

“One of the most disruptive developments over the past couple of years is the emergence of IPv6/6LoWPAN,” says Mareca Hatler, ON World’s research director. “Smart Energy is IP sensing’s main driver today but it is also gaining traction in other markets such as Lighting Controls, Smart Cities, and Health and Wellness.”
It has been a decade since technologists first talked about the “Internet of Things.” Although there are many definitions and perspectives on what this means, it is clear that smart objects will become the largest part of the Internet’s addressable space in the future. The question has been: How do we connect with the virtually limitless smart objects that will and are being provisioned in personal area networks (PANs), home area networks (HANs), WLANs, LANs, WANs, etc.? That question has largely been answered with IPv6/6LoWPAN and ON World’s latest report analyzes the potentially disruptive impact and how ZigBee and 802.15.4 are energizing this expanding ecosystem.
6LoWPAN is now available from nearly a dozen 802.15.4 suppliers and there is a growing trend toward open source development. Dust Networks recently demonstrated an IPv6 enabled wireless chipset powered by Micropelt’s thermo-generator and Cymbet’s thin-film batteries. NXP has just announced an open source platform for its 802.15.4/6LoWPAN chipset that features a simple, small stack. Also, ZMD recently launched a sub 1GHz 802.15.4 module that also supports 6LoWPAN.
A few of ON World’s findings include:
- Smart Energy made up 44% of the ZigBee/802.15.4 units shipped in 2010.
- The pace of ZigBee product certification has accelerated by 140% over the past 12 months.
- The Smart Home is one of the largest ZigBee/802.15.4 markets and wireless systems could reach 34 million homes worldwide in 2015.
- Wireless lighting controls are set to increase by 724% over the next five years.
- There are currently dozens of ZigBee/802.15.4 component suppliers and several new entrants such as Accent and Analog Devices.
- There are several key standards that are nearing completion including ZigBee Smart Energy version 2 (SE 2.0); IEEE 802.15.4e (a MAC enhancement for reliability in harsh environments); and IEEE 802.15.4g (Smart Utility Networks).
In 2015, global annual revenues for ZigBee/802.15.4 modules—including drop-in RF modules and the equivalent OEM costs for chipset designs-- will reach $1.7 billion from an aggressive viewpoint, up from $429 million in 2010.
