Zimmerman's lawyers withdraw from US shooting case, say they've lost contact with him

ORLANDO, Fla. - Attorneys for a U.S. neighbourhood watch volunteer who fatally shot an unarmed black teen have withdrawn as his counsel, saying they haven't heard from him since Sunday.

Attorney Craig Sonner says George Zimmerman went against his lawyers' advice and contacted the special prosecutor who will decide if he should face charges. Sonner spoke to a news conference Tuesday.

Zimmerman says he shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in self-defence after following him in a Florida gated community on Feb. 26.

Zimmerman was not arrested, and numerous protests have been held across the U.S.

A spokeswoman for prosecutor Angela Corey's office didn't immediately respond to an email and phone calls.
