Substitute writes racial slur on whiteboard, TikTok shows. Nevada district fires him

A substitute teacher in a Nevada school district was fired after he wrote a racial slur on a whiteboard during class, according to local news outlets.

The teacher was working as a substitute at Charles Silvestri Junior High School in Las Vegas, according to KVVU.

A video uploaded to TikTok on April 12 shows a male teacher standing at a whiteboard in a classroom and starting to erase words, including a racial slur and the word and symbol “= Black.”

A photo of the whiteboard and teacher was also posted on Twitter by an account called No Racism in Schools #1865.

The Clark County School District, which oversees the high school, did not immediately respond to a request for comment from McClatchy News on April 13.

The school’s principal sent a letter home to families to inform them about an incident that “involved communication that contained racial implications,” according to KSNV.

“The administration will continue to communicate with you about these situations because it will take the entire Silvestri Junior High School community to condemn these actions collectively,” the letter obtained by the outlet says. “As the school principal, I assure you that appropriate action will be taken against those responsible based on the outcome of the investigation.”

Social media users, including the Nevada attorney general, commented on the incident online.

“Who could possibly think this is appropriate?!” Nevada Attorney General Aaron D. Ford wrote on Twitter. “Shameful and offensive.”

“Hard to believe that (Clark County School District) substitute would lack common sense and write out a racial slur on the whiteboard,” wrote another Twitter user.

The letter from the principal also thanked the students who came forward to report the actions by the substitute teacher, according to KSNV. The letter did not identify the teacher.

“We are thankful to the students who immediately brought this to our attention,” the letter says, according to KVVU, which also obtained it. “Silvestri Junior High School is dedicated to inclusion as the foundation of emotional, social, and academic growth and support of all individuals.”

Charles Silvestri Junior High School serves grades six-eight and enrolls 1,415 students, according to U.S. News & World Report.
