Who voted against the debt ceiling bill in the House? These 117 lawmakers opposed it

WASHINGTON − The debt ceiling deal passed the House with overwhelming bipartisan support Wednesday night, but it also had plenty of bipartisan opposition: 117 members voted against it.

Seventy-one Republicans and 46 Democrats voted against the debt limit bill. Four lawmakers did not vote, including Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo.

Several far-right conservatives, including members of the Freedom Caucus, opposed the legislation and criticized House Speaker Kevin McCarthy for agreeing to a deal they say doesn't go far enough to cut spending. House progressives also voted against the bill, but for different reasons: They criticized the legislation for expanding work requirements for food stamps, expediting permitting for oil and gas projects, and capping future spending.

The opposition, specifically within the GOP caucus, is the latest move of contention for McCarthy since Republicans took over the House after the 2022 midterms. A debt ceiling bill passing in both chambers and President Joe Biden signing it into law would mark the first major win for McCarthy since his ascension to speakership.
