007 style? Real life rescue scene plays out in Matera

STORY: A firefighter helicopter rescued a man who was injured when he was hiking near the banks of the Gravina river, on the outskirts of Matera, a city evoking early Christian and even prehistoric times.

The rescue operation was carried out with the stunning backdrop of the city's “Sassi” limestone cave dwellings dug into the hillside and cascading in gravity-defying fashion down a steep slope towards the river.

The spectacular rescue ended successfully as the hiker was transferred to the 'Madonna delle Grazie' hospital in Matera with a leg fracture.
