'06 New Brighton grad serving aboard USS Abraham Lincoln in RIMPAC exercises

PEARL HARBOR — U.S. Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Trey Moore is a long way from home.

Of course, his time in the Navy has taken the New Brighton High School Class of 2006 graduate all over the world. His journey continues in the Pacific Ocean where the Beaver County native is currently serving aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln — a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier operating out of San Diego — as part of the world's largest international maritime warfare exercise, Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC).

Moore is a cryptologic technician, who is responsible for controlling the flow of messages and information to and from the aircraft carrier, while also conducting electronic warfare aboard ships, according to a press release from the U.S. Navy.

As a cryptologic technician in the Navy, Moore is able to use his skills while maintaining values he learned growing up in Beaver County and the greater Pittsburgh area.

“I grew up understanding what blue collar, hard work is,” he said in a press release from the Navy regarding his service. “Being from Pittsburgh, you get to see the best of blue-collar work.”

That blue-collar, hard-working mentality shows up each day for Moore, who oversees 12 sailors in his unit aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln during RIMPAC.

Participating in RIMPAC is providing not only Moore, but fellow sailors a unique training opportunity that helps participants foster and sustain cooperative relationships that are critical to ensuring safety at sea and security on the world's oceans. RIMPAC 2022 is the 28th exercise in the series that began in 1971, according to the U.S. Navy.

The theme of RIMPAC 2022 is Capable, Adaptive, Partners. The participating nations and forces exercise a wide range of capabilities and demonstrate the inherent flexibility of maritime forces. These capabilities range from disaster relief and maritime security operations to sea control and complex warfighting, the Navy stated in a press release. The relevant, realistic training program includes gunnery, missile, anti-submarine and air defense exercises, as well as amphibious, counter-piracy, mine clearance operations, explosive ordnance disposal and diving and salvage operations.

While participating in RIMPAC, Moore has been able to continue his life's journey outside of the Beaver County borders, this time heading to Pearl Harbor for the start of the maritime warfare exercises. While in Hawaii, he has been able to have an experience of a lifetime.

“At RIMPAC I have been able to experience Hawaii for the first time,” said Moore. “The culture, the people, the climate, the food, it’s all interesting and enjoyable.”

Not bad for the New Brighton native all these years later.
