1,600+ Escambia school library books pulled for review, including dictionaries. See the list:

The Florida Freedom to Read Project has released a list of over 1,600 books that, as of December, have been removed from Escambia County Public School District library shelves for review to ensure compliance with new legislation.

The list includes eight different encyclopedias and five dictionaries, "The Guinness Book of World Records," "Ripley’s Believe it or Not!" "Anne Frank’s Diary of a Young Girl" and "The Autobiography of Malcolm X," among many others.

The district’s current reconsideration spreadsheet, which is intended to log the status of the latest challenges and was last updated on Dec. 15, cites only 236 total challenges.

In August, the school district confirmed all of the district's library books were under review for sexual content in response to Florida HB 1069, a bill that took effect on July 1 and established statewide practices and policies surrounding the content of school library books.

"The 1,000+ books they reference have not been banned or removed from the school district; rather, they have simply been pulled for further review to ensure compliance with the new legislation," according to ECPS spokesperson Cody Strother.

According to the Florida Freedom to Read Project, the organization's mission is "to bring together parent-led groups from across the state of Florida and unite our voices to protect every student’s right to access information and ideas."
