1,793 join in Travis Manion Foundation 5K run in Doylestown

It has been 15 years since Marine 1st Lt. Travis Manion, of Doylestown, was killed in Iraq while helping fellow teammates, but his legacy lives on through the foundation that bears his name.

On Sunday, 1,793 runners registered for a 5K event and a 1-mile walk in his hometown to honor Manion and to support the foundation's work of helping veterans in their efforts to help their communities.

The Doylestown race is the signature event among about 90 "9/11 Heroes Run" races held in person and virtually worldwide that draw a total of 60,000+ participants.

"The annual race, the original race in what is now a 90-race series, unites the nation to remember the lives lost on September 11th and in the wars since, while honoring veterans, military, and first responders who serve our country and our communities," said foundation spokesman Ed Donovan.

Manion's legacy lives on in the words he spoke before leaving for his final deployment, "If Not Me, Then Who..." Guided by this mantra, veterans continue to serve their country in their post-military lives as role models of character, leadership and service both for youth and for their communities.

Beneficiaries from the Sunday event include the Doylestown Fire Co., Central Bucks Regional Police Foundation, the Colby Umbrell Memorial Fund, the CPT Connor Bednarzyk Memorial Fund and the Travis Manion Foundation.
