1 dead, 1 in critical condition after 2 pedestrian crashes Tuesday night

Two pedestrians were hit by cars in separate incidents Tuesday night, according to police and paramedics. A 67-year-old man from Newark was struck fatally, and a 30-year-old woman is in critical condition.

Delaware State Police said that the fatal crash occurred outside Newark, near the Maryland state border, at 11:46 p.m. The pedestrian walked into the westbound lane of West Chapel Hill Road just as a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe turned left onto the street from Ott's Chapel Road, according to police.

The 49-year-old driver of the Tahoe swerved to the right to avoid hitting the man, police said, but the front right of the car struck the pedestrian. The man was taken to the hospital, where police reported he later died. His identity has not been released.

Police said the pedestrian was wearing dark clothing, and the intersection was "not well lit." The driver was not injured, and West Chestnut Hill Road was closed for about three hours. Earlier Tuesday night, a second pedestrian was hit by a car in Newport, according to New Castle County Paramedics. First responders said they were called to West Newport Pike near Glenmore Drive near Glenmore Drive at 7:08 p.m. They arrived to find a woman with head injuries and "suspected internal injuries."

The woman was taken to Christiana Hospital, where she was in critical condition Wednesday morning. Delaware State Police are investigating the crash.
