One person was killed and another injured when a pickup slid into a car going in the opposite lane of the highway in Hartley County on Thursday afternoon during a winter storm.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), at about 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, a 2017 Ford F-250 had been traveling southwest on US 87 while a 2014 Nissan Altima was traveling northeast on the highway about six miles southwest of Dalhart. DPS said the F-250 was traveling at an unsafe speed for the snowy roadway conditions and slid into the northeast-bound lane, striking the Altima.

The driver of the Altima, identified as Anna Agosto, 22 of Tuscon, Arizona, was taken to Coon Memorial Hospital in Dalhart with non-life-threatening injuries. A passenger of the Altima, identified as Brett Jones, 23, of Stone Mountain, Georgia, was pronounced dead at the scene by Hartley County Justice of the Peace Carol Smith.

The pickup's driver, identified as Garrett Henderson, 19, of Farwell, was not injured.

The posted speed limit was 75 mph, and road conditions were hazardous due to snow on the roadway and ongoing snowfall at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation.
