Man charged in connection with deadly crash in east Charlotte, CMPD says

One person has died and two others were hurt after a crash in east Charlotte early Sunday morning, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Police said they responded to a crash just before 2 a.m. on Shamrock Drive and North Sharon Amity Road.

At the scene, police said they found a 2019 Mazda CX-5 and a 2008 Chevrolet Suburban with heavy front-end damage sitting in the roadway.

The drivers of both vehicles were transported from the scene to Atrium Main with minor injuries.

A passenger in the Mazda, later identified as 67-year-old Benita Lanier, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Chevrolet was traveling south on N. Sharon Amity Road when it struck the Mazda as it was making a left turn, CMPD said.

Police said the driver of the Chevrolet, later identified as 34-year-old Fredis Omar Umanzor Vazquez, was screened and found to be impaired.

After an interview with police said Vazquez was charged with felony death by motor vehicle, possession of an open container in a motor vehicle, and no operator’s license.
