1 dead, 6 shot during Cinco de Mayo party in Mississippi
A 19-year-old man is dead and at least six other people were shot Friday during a Cinco de Mayo party in southern Mississippi, authorities said.
The incident happened late Friday night at The Scratch Kitchen, a restaurant in downtown Ocean Springs, just east of Biloxi.
The victim was identified as Chase Harmon, of Pascagoula. The other six people were taken to local hospitals, Ocean Springs Police Capt. Ryan LeMair said in a news release.
There were about 200 people at the restaurant at the time, owner Brittany Alexander told the local Sun Herald.
She said the suspect ran through security without being frisked or having his ID checked, something that’s required of people to enter the patio, which is only allowed for patrons 21 and older.
“Literally when I turned around to try to grab him, the shots had already rung off and then everybody rushed out,” she said. “The person who did the shooting wasn’t a customer. He didn’t get an armband or anything to be out here.”
As of Saturday morning, police had made no arrests and asked the public for help. “We urge anyone with any information to call the Ocean Springs Police Department,” LeMair said.
The incident marked the second mass shooting on the Mississippi Coast in less than a week.
On Sunday, a shooting at a post-prom house party left two high school students dead and four wounded.
A 19-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with two counts of homicide and four counts of aggravated assault.
