A police car chase turned into a fatal crash early Saturday morning in the city's northwest side, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Just before 3 a.m., a Pontiac hit a pedestrian on the 6600 block of Michigan Road and drove off, leading officers in a short pursuit, said IMPD Officer Samone Burris.

The Pontiac then struck a silver Mazda that had been sitting by a red light, causing the Mazda to catch fire.

Two people rescued from the Mazda were sent to local hospitals, one in stable and another in critical condition. A third person was pronounced dead at the scene, said Burris.

The deceased was identified as 23-year-old Nyla Sanders by the Marion County Coroner's Office.

The driver of the Pontiac was examined on the scene and transported to a local hospital for a blood draw as part of the accident investigation.

The pedestrian is in stable condition. Officers were not involved in the crash, police said.

No names have been released.

In addition to investigating the accident, city police are conducting an internal investigation to ensure officers complied with department policies, Burris said. The investigation is standard for officer pursuits that result in injuries.
