A preliminary investigation found that a Toyota Corolla driver failed to recognize traffic had slowed to a crawl and rear-ended a Toyota Highlander, which was driven by a 36-year-old Woodbridge, Virginia, woman, according to James Salmon, a spokesman for the Delaware River and Bay Authority.

"The intensity of the initial impact caused a chain-reaction collision with two other vehicles," Salmon said.

The Highlander was forced into a Ford F-150, operated by a 58-year-old Newark man. The pickup then rear-ended another Highlander that was driven by a 51-year-old Wyckoff, New Jersey, man.

The Corolla driver, a 24-year-old Florida man, was taken to an area hospital where he died.

The woman driving the first Highlander to be struck and three of her passengers were taken to an area hospital. Salmon said the injuries appeared to be not life-threatening.

Traffic flow was significantly impacted with vehicles back up more than 7 miles at one point, Salmon said. The scene was cleared by about 2:30 p.m., and all lanes were reopened at that time.
