1 dead, more than 20 injured after Illinois hayride accident

One person was killed and at least 20 were injured Saturday after a tractor overturned during a hayride in Illinois.

According to the Illinois State Police, a 32-year-old woman was killed in the accident which occurred about 9 p.m. in rural Hancock County, about 270 miles southwest from Chicago near the state’s border with Iowa.

The woman has not been identified yet.

The vehicle, a green John Deere tractor “lost control" while on an incline "and ran off the right side” into a wooden ravine while it was towing a trailer carrying between 20 and 25 people, according to police.

Wayne York, the 41-year-old driver, and several of the passengers were ejected in the incident.

The injured ranged in ages from 1 to 43 and were transported to a nearby hospital.

Illinois State Police Captain Jon Dively Jr. said one of the children suffered significant injuries.

The tractor was undersized to be carrying such a heavy load, the Illinois State Police said.

York was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
