Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. The Georgetown County Coroner has identified a 76-year-old man who was killed in a shooting at a residence near the Wachesaw Road traffic circle in Murrells Inlet. Jim Thomas was identified as the person killed, and two other people were injured and treated at a local hospital. The shooting happened early on Wednesday, and is a rare event in the normally quiet neighborhood. (WBTW)

  2. Friends, family, and coaches of South Florence High School athlete, Quay Dickens, described the teen as having a "bright future ahead of him," as they process that he was killed in a Myrtle Beach shooting over the weekend. Dickens was a star football and basketball player, and had earned a football scholarship to Tusculum University. Dickens' sister says she wants everyone to remember him as a lovable person. The family will be having a celebration of life this weekend. (WMBF)

  3. Tidelands Health team members were recognized by Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of commerce for their community service during the pandemic. 5. Four structures were damaged, but no one was injured, from a fire in the Tuscany Community on Tuesday night. The two-alarm blaze began around 7 p.m. on Arezzo Way, and turned into a three-alarm fire soon after. This was Horry County's first three-alarm blaze for 2022. Around 75 firefighters responded to the call. Eight adults were displaced, and will receive aid from the American Red Cross. The cause of the fire is under investigation. (wpde.com)

  • Reader Nate Palmer reminded me that locals often get discounts in and around the Grand Strand, just by asking and then showing ID that proves they are a local resident. Here are some lists of places that give locals a discount. I always forget to ask, and maybe you do, too! Also, remember anyone over 55 can usually get a senior rate or discount — all you have to do is ask. (MyrtleBeach.com) (Visit Myrtle Beach)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
