1 dead after late night house fire on Colfax Avenue in Binghamton, cause investigated

One person is dead following a blaze late Friday night that damaged two homes in Binghamton's First Ward.

Units from the Binghamton Fire Department were dispatched around 11:30 p.m. Friday for reports of a house fire and possible entrapment of victims at 72 Colfax Ave.

Arriving firefighters discovered the flames had spread to the adjacent home at 74 Colfax Ave., along with a pickup truck parked between the two houses.

A second alarm was called after residents at the scene informed firefighters occupants were still inside the structure at 72 Colfax St. Firefighters quickly entered the home and searched in zero visibility and high heat, fire officials said.

One victim was located on the first floor in the rear of the residence and was taken outside, where Binghamton fire paramedics and EMTs began treatment.

The victim was transported by Broome Ambulance to the emergency department at UHS Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City. Lifesaving measures were unsuccessful and the victim, whose name had not been released Monday morning, was pronounced dead.

One Binghamton firefighter suffered a dislocated shoulder when he fell five feet while battling the blaze. He was transported to Wilson Medical Center for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.

The Broome, Union and Vestal volunteer emergency squads assisted at the scene with treatment and transport of victims, while the Vestal, Port Dickinson and Five Mile Point fire departments were on standby.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Binghamton Fire Department and Binghamton Police Department.
