MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two shootings near one another at around the same time left a trail of blood in South Memphis on Monday.

A man was shot and killed on Danny Thomas Boulevard Monday morning, Memphis Police say.

A little after 11 a.m., officers responded to a shooting in the area of Danny Thomas and Georgia Avenue in the parking lot of the old Gay Hawk restaurant. A man was found with a gunshot wound and taken to Regional One where he was pronounced dead.

A witness on the scene said he heard rapid gunfire, sounding similar to an AR-15. He saw responders working on a victim, as well as a car with a shot-out window.

Memphis Shelby County Schools issued the following statement:
As a precaution, Booker T. Washington High School has been placed on lockdown while law enforcement investigates a matter in the surrounding area.

Police confirmed the shooting had nothing to do with the school, and the lockdown was lifted.

Monday evening, MPD released a video on Facebook of what has been identified as a black Chevrolet Malibu and a red Chevrolet Tahoe traveling eastbound on Mississippi Boulevard.

Though it appears that the Tahoe lost control, police say that’s because the driver of the Malibu was firing shots at the Tahoe, ultimately killing the man inside.

Police say the suspect was still on the loose.

At 12:35, police responded to another shooting at Crump Boulevard and Mississippi Boulevard a few blocks away.

Three victims were found with gunshot wounds at that location. One male was pronounced dead at the scene, a woman was taken to Regional One in critical condition, where she later died, and a 2-year-old child was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in critical condition.

“Today is just Monday, and all this is going on. It’s just sad,” a resident in the area said. “It’s like a warzone. Memphis is a warzone. And I don’t know what they’re going to be able to do to stop all the crime and the shootings.”

Police have not said whether the two shootings so close together were related.

“Not less than one minute away and it’s another shooting. And I come down this way and try to get around and it’s another shooting. I don’t know what’s going on. This eclipse must be making people crazy I guess. I don’t know,” one resident in the area said.
