East River High quarterback killed in Wedgefield crash

The 18-year-old who was killed in a crash in Wedgefield early Sunday was Nick Miner, a senior at East River High and quarterback of the school’s football team, the school district confirmed.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Miner’s Ford F-150 truck was pulling another gray Ford pickup back onto Dallas Boulevard after it got stuck on the shoulder when a third vehicle, driven by a 27-year-old woman, collided with the two pickups around 1 a.m. Sunday.

Miner’s truck overturned and he was ejected and pronounced dead, according to FHP.

Two pedestrians, a 20-year-old woman and a 17-year-old girl, standing outside of the gray Ford pickup were struck by the white pickup as it overturned, FHP said.

The two sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, according to FHP.

The investigation is active and ongoing with charges pending, FHP said.

Grief counselors were available at East River High on Monday, Principal Becky Watson said in a message to parents. The school also canceled after-school activities on Monday.

“I know I speak for our entire East River High community when I express the grief felt at the loss of one of our own. My thoughts and prayers are with this student’s family and friends as they go through this extremely difficult time,” Watson said. “... A wide range of emotions can be felt during the grief process and we encourage you to openly discuss your son or daughter’s reaction to this news.”

Please keep our students and staff in your thoughts at this very difficult time. Thank you for your support.

Meanwhile, friends and teammates gathered on the roadside to remember Miner, WESH-Channel 2 reported.

“Great guy, always willing to help out anybody, stop anything he’s doing during the day to help all his friends out. He was just a great guy in general,” Arlen Wadsworth told WESH.
