1 fatal, 9 injury crashes added to latest Sturgis Motorcycle Rally report

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety's latest incident report for the 83rd Sturgis Motorcycle Rall reported one fatal crash and nine injury accidents between Wednesday and Thursday.

According to the daily report, a 61-year-old male rider on a motorcycle died after hitting a 2008 GMC Yukon head-on at 1:49 a.m. Thursday, near mile marker 24 on Interstate 90.

The rider was riding east in the westbound lane when the accident occurred. He was wearing a helmet and pronounced dead at the scene, the DPS report stated. The driver and passengers of the SUV were not injured.

This is the third fatal crash to occur in Sturgis since the rally began Aug. 4 and is equal to the last year-to-date total.

DPS also said nine injury crashes occurred on Wednesday, bringing the total up to 41 so far, above the 35 injury-related crashes reported in the same time frame last year.

Eight more DUI arrests were made since 6 a.m. Wednesday, for a total of 79 throughout the rally, which marks a decrease from the 97 arrests made last year to date.

Drug arrests, however, jumped again in the latest tally, following another marked increase from the previous report. Authorities made 33 more misdemeanor drug arrests and 51 more felony drug arrests so far, raising the total misdemeanor and felony drug arrests to 151 and 119, respectively.

Thursday's report also comes a day after a South Dakota Highway Patrol officer shot and injured one person early Wednesday morning in Sturgis, according to a South Dakota Attorney General's office release. The shooting incident remains under investigation by the Division of Criminal Investigation and was not included in the rally tally.

The rally continues through Aug. 13.
