MADISON TOWNSHIP — A 20-year-old Vermilion man was killed and six people were hospitalized after a four-vehicle crash on U.S. 6 late Sunday night in Sandusky County.

Six people were taken to area hospitals and five others were treated at the scene for their injuries.

According to a news release from the Ohio Highway Patrol, James Baker Jr., 42, of Toledo, was driving a 2011 Ford F-150 pickup eastbound on U.S. 6 west of Fremont when he drove left of center in an attempt to pass several vehicles at 10:32 p.m. Sunday.

Baker's pickup struck three westbound vehicles ending with a head-on crash with a 2006 Ford Five Hundred whose right rear passenger, David Walker II, 20, of Vermilion, sustained fatal injuries, the patrol said.

Baker first struck a 2013 Ford Focus driven by Michael Jamison, 18, of Fremont, with four passengers. Jamison attempted to swerve to the right when Baker's pickup hit the car, sending the Focus off the north side of the road where it struck two tree stumps before coming to rest.

Jamison and his passengers were treated and released at the scene.

Baker then struck a 2018 Chevrolet Colorado pickup driven by Elizabeth Suhr, 24, of Celina. Suhr's vehicle went off the north side of the roadway and struck a tree, the patrol said. Suhr and her passenger were transported to the Wood County Hospital.

Baker continued eastbound and then crashed head-on into the Ford Five Hundred being driven by Steven Iwanek, 20, of South Amherst, carrying three passengers. Iwanek and two passengers were taken to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo.

Baker also was taken to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.

The highway patrol said alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.

US 6 was closed for five hours after the crash.

Assisting the highway patrol at the scene were the Sandusky County Sheriff's Office, the Ohio Department of Transportation, the Helena Fire Department, Madison Motors, Pat & Son Towing, Ash's Towing, and Grunden's Towing.

Patient conditions were not immediately available Monday from the emergency departments at Wood County Hospital and St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.
