1 killed, 2 injured in ATV crashes in Genesee and Wayne counties

One person was killed and two teenagers were wounded in two all-terrain vehicle crashes in the Rochester region earlier this week.

Michael D. Borkholder, 60 of Oakfield, Genesee County, was killed in an ATV crash on Maple Road in Alabama, Genesee County, around 6:30 p.m. Monday, according to New York State Police.

He was driving south on Maple Road and failed to stop, striking the back of an ATV as it slowed to turn into a driveway. Borkholder was thrown from his own ATV and was flown to Erie County Medical Center, where he died from his injuries, troopers said.

In a separate crash, two 13-year-old boys were injured - one suffering serious injuries - in an ATV crash on Bassett Road in Butler, Wayne County, around 8:25 p.m. Tuesday, troopers said. State Police said it appeared that the teens failed to negotiate a curve in the road and drove down an embankment. The driver was flown to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he is in critical condition. The passenger was taken to Upstate Medical University Hospital in Syracuse, where he is in stable condition.

Troopers continue to investigate both crashes.
