Police identify 104-year-old mother, daughter killed Saturday in crash near Lewes

An elderly mother and daughter have been identified as the victims of a two-car crash Saturday north of Lewes that left five people hurt, two fatally, according to Delaware State Police.

The second passenger killed while traveling in a Subaru Outback has been identified as Irma Koch, the 104-year-old mother of the first passenger who died in the crash, police said. Koch died on Sunday from her injuries, a police spokesperson said. Her daughter, 73-year-old Carol Greblunas, died on Saturday — the same day as the crash.

Three other people were injured in the crash that took place about 3:40 p.m. Saturday on Minos Conaway Road.

The women's deaths and a fatal crash in the Dover area Monday evening add to an already brutal year on Delaware roads, which are experiencing the second-highest number of traffic fatalities since the state started keeping records. As of Tuesday morning, there have been 154 traffic fatalities so far this year.

Delaware's record number of traffic fatalities occurred in 1988 when the state saw 165 people killed.

Greblunas was a backseat passenger in the Subaru, while her mother was riding in the vehicle's front passenger seat, police said.

The SUV, which was being driven by a 75-year-old Lewes man, was eastbound on Minos Conaway Road, approaching a sharp curve, police said. The Subaru driver failed to negotiate the curve and entered the opposing traffic lane, crashing into a Lexus RX.

The Lexus' driver, a 69-year-old man from Lewes, and his passenger, a 68-year-old woman from Lewes, were taken to an area hospital for serious injuries. The Subaru driver was also taken to an area hospital for serious injuries.
