2 killed when SUV collides with 18-wheeler in Newport News

Two males were killed Friday when a speeding SUV crashed into a tractor-trailer in Newport News, police said.

The accident occurred at 11:55 a.m. in the 100 block of Yorktown Road, west of Jefferson Avenue near Lee Hall Mansion.

Newport News Police spokeswoman Sarah Ketchum said the tractor-trailer was headed north on Yorktown Road when it collided with an SUV “traveling southbound at a high rate of speed.”

One male in the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene, while another was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and died at the hospital, Ketchum said. It was not immediately clear whether the males were adults or juveniles, with police unable to confirm their identities as of Friday evening.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured. The accident closed travel between Jefferson Avenue and Chelsea Place for several hours before the roadway reopened in the late afternoon. The accident is still under investigation.
