Man killed in Dillon County crash attempting to elude law enforcement was suspect in Marlboro County shooting, authorities say

DILLON COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A man who was killed in a crash Wednesday attempting to elude law enforcement in Dillon County was allegedly a suspect in a Marlboro County shooting before the crash, authorities said.

The crash happened at about 6 p.m. on Judson Road, according to Master Trooper Brandon Bolt with South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Bolt said a 2002 Ford sedan was traveling west on Judson Road when it ran off the right side of the road, then traveled off to the left before hitting an embankment and overturning.

The Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office said it responded to a residence on Carolina Church Road in the Clio area about someone shooting a gun into a home.

When they arrived, deputies spoke with the homeowner and his wife. After speaking with them, they learned that a man had come to the home to collect a debt for drugs when an argument ensued.

The homeowner said the man pulled out two handguns and started shooting at the home, deputies said. The man left before authorities arrived but the homeowner gave a detailed description of the vehicle.

While Marlboro County deputies were still on scene of the shooting, the Dillon County Sheriff’s Office notified them of a crash near Judson Road and Highway 57 where the vehicle involved in the shooting was found rolled over.

The man was the only person in the vehicle and the South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
