An unidentified suspect was killed Saturday afternoon following an inter-city chase with police that ended in a shootout outside a storage facility in New Smyrna Beach, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said.

At about 4 p.m., the unnamed shooting victim fled from police during a traffic stop near Nova and Spruce Creek roads in Port Orange, the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. After crashing in the area of Turnbull Street and Industrial Park Avenue, he bailed out of the car and started firing at officers, injuring one before he was shot and killed by a deputy.

The wounded officer — who also has not been named along with the deputy who killed the suspect — was taken to a hospital and is recovering.

The Sheriff’s Office said the incident was recorded on dash and body cameras and expects to release that footage in the coming days. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting while the officers who responded are on administrative leave.
