PROVIDENCE — A confrontation between two groups of young men moved from the street to a rolling conflict, with shots fired at four locations in the Hartford neighborhood early Wednesday evening, the police said.

One man was shot in the shoulder and another, traveling home from work, was inside a Honda SUV that was pushed onto its side on Plainfield Street, said Providence police Maj. David Lapatin.

It appeared that an initial encounter between the men took place on Hartford Avenue, Lapatin said.

One group chased the other in a pursuit that moved through various streets at about 5:30 p.m., Lapatin said.

Shots fired in different locations

Shots were fired at about four locations in the area, he said, adding that it wasn't clear if both groups had opened fire.

Police were told that one man was shot at Neutaconkanut Park. That man's injury was not life-threatening, Lapatin said.

The Honda CR-V was hit by one of the vehicles on Plainfield Street near Barrows Street, Lapatin said, adding that the driver of the Honda wasn't injured.

The young men fled the area and Providence police had made no arrests as of Wednesday evening, Lapatin said.
