Man shot dead in Myles Standish State Forest

PLYMOUTH − A New Bedford man who was shot after a fight at Myles Standish State Forest has died of his injuries, Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz said.

He said the Wednesday shooting was not a random act of violence and there is no threat to the public.

Cruz identified the victim as Robert Aponte-Flores, 25, of New Bedford.

Plymouth police and State Police were notified about the shooting at about 2:35 p.m.

State Police vehicles and crime tape blocked off access to a tree-lined area near Fearing Pond Road on Wednesday, according to WCVB.

Cruz said the shooting stemmed from an altercation in a nearby picnic area.

The victim was shot several times and taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Plymouth, where he was later pronounced dead, WCVB reported.

Plymouth police said in a Facebook post that State Police had taken someone into custody but then determined that the person was not the shooter.

A woman who identified herself only as Nicole told WCVB she pulled into the parking area as CPR was being performed on Aponte-Flores. She also performed CPR on him before he was taken to the hospital.

"He had three gunshots, one to the face, shoulder and arm," she said. "That was pretty much the scariest thing I've ever done. I'm really sorry for their family."

Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
