1 person dead after gunfire exchanged with police during Lenexa hotel disturbance

One person is dead after allegedly exchanging gunfire with police officers who were investigating a disturbance at a Lenexa hotel early Tuesday, a police spokesman said.

Officers responded shortly after 5 a.m. to the Extended Stay America hotel at 8015 Lenexa Drive in Lenexa after receiving “multiple reports of a disturbance happening in a room between a male and a female,” said Master Police Officer Danny Chavez, a spokesman for Lenexa police.

“Shots were exchanged between officers and the suspect,” Chavez said. Two officers fired their weapons during the exchange.

The suspect was declared dead at the scene. Police believe the suspect was in one of the rooms but it was not known if he was a registered hotel guest.

The officers, who were not injured in the shooting, will be on leave pending an investigation headed by the Johnson County officer involved shooting investigative team, Chavez said.
