Woman dead after house fire in Wood River, Illinois, crews investigating

WOOD RIVER, Ill. – A woman has died after a fatal house fire in Wood River, Illinois.

The fire broke out at a home on the 800 block of State Street. Firefighters responded to a call around 5:14 a.m., where crews were initially trying to enter the front of the home but were unable to due to the heavy smoke.

Hostage situation at downtown Drury Hotel

After entering the back of the home, a firefighter found the woman dead on the left side. The call first came in as an elderly woman, possibly trapped inside a burning home. Neighbors also saw the resident’s car parked outside. It took about 30 minutes to put out the flames.

Several departments are still at the scene, investigating. So far, the cause of the fire has not been reported. FOX 2 will update these stories with more information as it becomes available.
