1 person killed, three others wounded in East St. Louis shooting

One person was killed and three others were wounded in a shooting Thursday in East St. Louis, Assistant Police Chief Nicholas Mueller said.

Aveon N. White, 28, of Florence Street, East St. Louis, was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:12 p.m., according to St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr

The identities of the three wounded people were not released. They drove to Touchette Regional Hospital in a private vehicle, and one of them was airlifted to a St. Louis hospital in critical condition, Mueller said.

Mueller said an officer was in the area of North 25th Street and Henrietta Avenue around 3:10 p.m. when he was flagged down by a female who said someone had been shot in the 2700 block of Ridge Avenue.

The officer found White lying in the middle of Ridge Avenue. He had been shot, and the officer found multiple shell casings in the road.

Mueller said police are investigating a motive for the shooting.

Illinois State Police Zone 6 Division of Criminal Investigations, at the request of the East St. Louis Police Department, responded to the scene to help investigate the shooting, according to a state police news release.
