1 teen killed, 9 wounded in shooting at St. Louis party

A 17-year-old boy was killed and nine other teenagers were wounded in a shooting at a party in St. Louis early Sunday morning, police said.

A second 17-year-old boy was arrested at the scene, local NBC affiliate KSDK reported. Neither was identified further.

The youngsters had gathered for a party at an office building in downtown St. Louis, according to local police. It remains unclear how they gained access to the space or why they chose it.

Shots rang out shortly after 1 a.m., sending the teens sprinting out of the building and onto the street outside.

Police said two 19-year-old men, an 18-year-old man, a second 17-year-old boy, three 16-year-old girls and a 15-year-old girl were shot and wounded, KSDK reported. A 17-year-old girl was trampled in the chaos and suffered serious spinal injuries, cops said.

Multiple weapons were found at the scene, including an assault-style rifle and at least one handgun, authorities said. The 17-year-old boy arrested at the scene was in possession of a handgun, according to cops.

Investigators have not publicly speculated on a motive for the shooting. They said only that it began inside and continued outside.

The violence in St. Louis was just one part of a deadly night across the U.S. At least 20 people were shot, one fatally, at a Juneteenth celebration outside Chicago. Additionally, two people were killed and three more wounded when gunfire erupted at a music festival in Washington state. Late Saturday night, eight people were wounded in a shooting at a pool party in Southern California.

Parties across the nation have been marred by gunfire throughout the spring.
