Power restored to most Athens area homes following Monday thunderstorm

Another round of severe thunderstorms rolled through the Athens area, and much of north Georgia, on Monday evening.

According to the Georgia Power outage map, more than 10,000 households in the Athens area were without power at one point on Monday, but that number had dwindled to just a few dozen by Tuesday morning. About 1,500 Georgia Power customers near Watkinsville and another 500 in Winterville had no power Monday evening, but that number had dropped to fewer than 50 by morning. Dozens of homes more were without power in neighboring counties, but much of that had been restored by morning, noted the Jackson EMC outage map.

There were early reports of trees down in Oconee County, including near the sheriff's office on Experiment Station Road and on VFW Drive.

The Athens area has experienced several severe storms, downing trees and causing widespread power outages, in the last month.

In Monday's storm, more than 1 million people across the eastern U.S. lost power. Much of the East Coast was under a tornado watch and at least two people − a 15-year-old boy in Anderson, South Carolina, and a 28-year-old Alabama man − died in the storms.
