20-acre fire threatened several homes in Vancleave, Mississippi fire official says
A fire burning Thursday across 20 acres in Vancleave threatened several homes before firefighters contained it by 7 p.m., according to the Mississippi Forestry Commission.
“Everything is 100 percent contained,” the commission’s outreach officer Kevin Craft said Thursday evening.
Craft said firefighters first responded Thursday afternoon to the fire near Seaman Road in Vancleave. It threatened 10 homes but did not prompt evacuations or damage the properties, he said.
No injuries were reported. It is unclear what caused the fire or where it began, Craft said.
The fire was the second to burn acreage in Jackson County in recent weeks. In January, a fire in the Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge in Gautier sent smoke across Interstate 10 and caused hours-long delays near Exit 61 before firefighters contained the blaze.
