From now on, Kristen Stewart isn’t just Kristen Stewart, she’s Oscar nominee Kristen Stewart. And depending on how things shake out on March 27, she could potentially be Oscar winner Kristen Stewart. Get ready to hear either of these in all her movie trailers going forward.
Kristen’s Hollywood career began when she was just a tween, and now she’s received her first Academy Award nomination for her starring role in Spencer, in which she plays Princess Diana during a particularly troubling Christmas holiday not long before her divorce from Prince Charles. It’s not a traditional biopic by any means, and Kristen wowed critics with her take on the beloved royal during one of her darkest times.
But this is far from the first time Kristen has received acclaim for her work, whether from movie insiders or her many fans. She might think she’s made only “5 really good films,” but you can check out her 10 best below, from her first major role at age 12 to today.
Panic Room
2002’s Panic Room wasn’t Kristen’s very first movie role, but it is the one that first brought her major attention as an actor. In the thriller, Kristen plays the daughter of Jodie Foster’s character as they try to outsmart burglars in their home. In a panic room. Obviously.
Twilight
Opinions of Twilight differ—greatly—but it seems unnatural to leave the sparkly vampire series off a list of Kristen’s movies. It meant a lot for her career and a lot to its many passionate fans, so the 2008 original gets a shout-out.
Adventureland
The year after the first Twilight movie, Kristen costarred with Jesse Eisenberg in Adventureland, about two young adults suffering through an annoying job at a theme park—and partying and falling in love—in 1987.
The Runaways
Kristen became Joan Jett for the 201o biopic The Runaways, about the all-women punk band of the same name. Not only did she look a lot like the rock icon, but she also did her own singing in the movie.
Clouds of Sils Maria
In Clouds of Sils Maria, Kristen plays the personal assistant to an actor, Maria (Juliette Binoche), and they develop complicated feelings for each other as Maria prepares for a play. For her performance in the 2014 drama, Kristen won the César Award (basically a French Oscar) for Best Supporting Actress.
Still Alice
Also in 2014, Kristen appeared in an even heavier movie: Still Alice. She plays the daughter of Julianne Moore’s character, Alice, a woman who finds out she has early onset Alzheimer’s disease.
Certain Women
2016’s Certain Women tells the stories of multiple women living in Montana and is based on the short stories by author Maile Meloy. Kristen stars as a law teacher who forms a relationship with a ranch hand (Lily Gladstone).
Personal Shopper
2016 was another busy year for Kristen. In addition to Certain Women, she received critical acclaim for her role in Personal Shopper, a thriller about a woman who tries to communicate supernaturally with her dead twin brother.
Happiest Season
Kristen often goes for intense dramas and thrillers, but in 2020, she tried out something much lighter: a rom-com. She costarred with Mackenzie Davis in Happiest Season, about a couple who pretend they’re just friends during a Christmas visit because Mackenzie’s character hasn’t come out to her family yet.
Spencer
And this brings us to Spencer, Kristen’s most acclaimed role and the one that brought her her first Oscar nomination. If you haven’t yet watched, expect a haunting portrayal of the princess and an unforgettable use of “All I Need Is a Miracle.”
