Topeka is celebrating the last full week of Black History Month with the love of locally cooked meals.

Black Restaurant and Food Truck Week started in 2021 through Warehouzz Management, Chris Ware's event and artist management company. Now in its third year, Ware said it's vital to keep the tradition alive for the Topeka community and restaurant owners.

"I just want to keep encouraging our Black restaurants and food trucks to get out there and be seen a little more," said Ware.

All customers interested are encouraged to ask for a "2023 or a 785 special" Each special may include a particular meal that food truck and restaurant owners have created for the week or a $7.85 meal. Each weekday is designated for a specific restaurant or food truck.

"That's one big thing that I hear in Topeka a lot is that we don't support each other," said Ware. "So, this event is just to encourage us to support each other and other races to support us as well. It's not just for Black people. It's for everybody."

What restaurants and food trucks are on the week lineup?

Hook and Que started the week on Monday in the front of Laces, 250 S.E. 29th St, with fish, chicken and shrimp meals. Owner John McMurray said business was steady.

"February is Black History Month," McMurray said, "so we're trying to support local African-American businesses, or any business for that matter."

Hook and Que began operating in the middle of last year.

"It's important for myself as a Black business owner and other Black business owners to get out in the community and try to give back to the community," McMurray said.
