Make it 10 consecutive league titles for the Bridgewater-Raynham girls basketball team

BRIDGEWATER – The gymnasium inside Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High may need a bigger banner. Or, just make room for a new one.

The girls basketball team's pennant of league titles is filling up fast, especially after its undergoes another update this offseason.

The Trojans (14-3, 7-0 league) claimed their league title for the 10th consecutive season with a 59-31 win over Dartmouth at home Monday evening. Through seven games against league opponents (Brockton, New Bedford, Dartmouth and Durfee), the Trojans have won by an average of 15.4 points per game, scoring 51.8 and allowing 36.4. The team has one league game left, against second-place Durfee (14-2 overall, 4-2 league) on the road, Friday at 6:30 p.m.

“A goal of ours is to win the conference, one of numerous goals within the season," said B-R head coach Cheryl Seavey. "But it’s nice to have that one checked off the list.”

“The new team this year, we’re really young. We were hoping to come back strong this year as a whole new everything – new team, new ideas. It feels good that everything is working out," Bartlett said of winning the league title.

Seven Trojans scored in the clincher over Dartmouth (9-7, 2-5 league) on Monday, five of them found the range from 3-point land as the team combined for 14 triples.

Sophomore guard Brenna Woodbury (15 points, 6 assists, 4 steals, 3 three-pointers), junior guard Reese Bartlett (13 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, 4 three-pointers), junior forward Natalia Hall-Rosa (13 points, 3 rebounds, 3 three-pointers) and sophomore center Jenna Micciantuono (11 points, 3 rebounds, 3 three-pointers) led the way as players with more than one hit from distance.

“As a coach, it’s always a good thing to see that ball splash. To see it as consistent as it was tonight, it’s really a testament to how hard they’ve been working in practice," Seavey said. "I thought Dartmouth’s pressure was outstanding, but we were able to get a couple of clean looks through some pick-and-roll action. It gave them enough time to get that shot off.”

In addition to the 14 3-pointers, B-R collectively recorded 17 assists.

“It definitely builds confidence. When everyone’s hitting shots, it gives everyone confidence," Bartlett said. "In these games where we’re winning already, no one is really afraid to take the shots that they’d sometimes be afraid to take in bigger games, so it definitely prepares everyone for those bigger games.”

Hall-Rosa, the second-leading scorer in the league at 19 points a night, recorded all 13 of her points in the second half. She picked up two quick fouls in the first three minutes and watched the remainder of first half from the sidelines. B-R led 28-16 at halftime and eight of the team's 10 first-half buckets were 3-pointers.

Woodbury led all scorers with 10 points at the break, followed by 9 from Bartlett and 6 from Micciantuono.

“We always have to have that next player mentality of who’s going to step up when something happens, whether it’s foul trouble, illness or injury. But what I loved from Natalia, is even though she wasn’t on the court, she was still fully engaged in the game – making corrections on the bench, cheering for her teammates, staying mentally focused so that when she did enter the game, she was able to contribute," Seavey said. "And obviously having Brenna, Jenna and Reese come alive in those time periods – they can do it. We know they can do it. It’s nice to see them have that performance.”

Micciantuono knocked down a right-wing 3-pointer and Hall-Rosa followed with one of her own from the opposite side on the next possession as B-R broke open a 41-19 lead, its largest up to that point, with 4:14 remaining in the third quarter.

Triumphant its last six times out, B-R slotted in as the No. 9 team in Div. 1 entering play Monday evening to solidify itself as the area's top-ranked team, beating out locals Weymouth (8-7, No. 19) and Quincy (14-2, No. 25) in the top 32 (the number of power-ranked seeds that can qualify for the state tournament without 10 wins).

“We’re continually reinforcing the idea that we need to be better than we were yesterday. That we are not a finished product. That even tonight was not a finished product," Seavy said postgame on Monday. "But we can continue to grow on each experience and get a little bit better, make those minor corrections that lead up to the big things. It’s something we often say: the little things add up into the big things.”

Bollin ballin' in Boston

On Saturday, the Trojans traveled into the city for the women's basketball game between Boston College and Duke in support of Duke freshman Shay Bollin, a 2022 B-R grad.

In four minutes, Bollin capped off Duke's 68-27 victory with a step-back jumper from nearly 3-point range (her foot was on the line).

"I couldn't be more blessed, I truly have the best support system. I love you all so much," Bollin tweeted about the hometown support after the game.

In seven games played this season, Bollin is averaging 2.4 points in just under six minutes per game. She put up a season-high 9 points in seven minutes against Charleston Southern, a 111-50 Duke win.

Bollin missed her junior and senior high school seasons at B-R rehabbing injury, but averaged 16.6 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.9 steals and 2.3 blocks as a freshman and 18.8 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 2.5 blocks and 2.2 steals as a sophomore.

“That was awesome," Bartlett said of seeing Bollin's basket against Boston College. "Everyone was loud. She got in the game, hit that shot, everyone went crazy. It was awesome to see her out there. We’ve all known her and watched her growing up so seeing her in that big gym, it’s every kid’s dream and she was doing it.”
