10-day-old baby boy, mother rescued from rubble days after earthquake hit Turkey, Syria

Yağız Ulaş and his mother were rescued 90 hours after a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Turkey and Syria.

He was 10 days old at the time of his rescue.

Video from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality shows a group of rescuers bringing the baby away from rubble as he moves his hand and arm. Ekrem İmamoğlu, the mayor of Istanbul, tweeted a photo of the baby after he was rescued in Turkey’s Hatay province

The boy’s mother was also rescued, according to multiple reports.

She was pale and appeared dazed, but she was conscious as she was carried on a stretcher.

The rescue comes as thousands of people have offered to adopt a newborn baby girl whose mother gave birth under the rubble of a collapsed apartment building in Syria.

Baby Aya’s mother, Afraa Abu Hadiya, her father and all four of her siblings died after the earthquake.

A 7-month old infant was also pulled out of a collapsed building in Turkey’s Hatya province, 66 hours after the quakes hit, the the National Medical Rescue Team said.

The earthquake has killed more than 23,000 people in Turkey and Syria. Officials in Turkey confirmed Friday that more than 77,000 people are injured in the country.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Friday that search-and-rescue efforts will continue until no people are trapped under the rubble. He also vowed to rebuild buildings within a year.

The Syrian government said Friday it is allowing earthquake aid to all parts of the country, including areas currently held by insurgent groups.
