A word that’s often used in the Bible to refer to difficult times often is “tribulation.”

It’s used in the famous lines in John 16:33 that encourage reliance on Jesus Christ for peace, especially during hard times. The passage reads, “In the world, ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”

Isaiah 43:2 agrees with the sentiment that we are not alone in times of doubt, uncertainty or distress. It says, “When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.”
