10 grown-up Halloween events in OKC where adults can treat themselves

Halloween isn't just for children.

From an interactive slasher movie to a cult-classic theatrical experience, this spooky season has plenty of treats in store for grown-ups, too.

Here are 10 Halloween events for grown-ups in the Oklahoma City area:

1. Museum After Dark: 'Synesthesia'

When and where: 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 27, Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art in Norman.

The University of Oklahoma art museum's immersive exhibit "Synesthesia," a colorful collaboration with the creative minds of OKC artist collective Factory Obscura, is designed to give children and adults alike ample opportunities to touch, crawl, explore and even make music. But adults can explore it without the kiddos during an eerie after-hours event where a cash bar will be open and costumes are encouraged. Admission is always free to the OU museum.

2. Lyric Theatre's 'Rocky Horror Show' 

When and where: Through Oct. 30, Lyric at the Plaza.

Every three years, Lyric Theatre does "The Time Warp" again by producing a new version of Richard O'Brien's famously interactive cult-classic stage experience. This year, expect a Texas twist with a "Rocky Horror" set in Denton, but know that the show still includes all the familiar songs, callbacks and adult situations. Lyric will sell $5 prop bags before each performance.

3. Haunt the Zoo: All Grown Up

When and where: 7 to 11 p.m. Oct. 28, Oklahoma City Zoo.

The OKC Zoo is transformed into a haunted summer camp for this after-hours event for revelers 21 and older. Camp-themed activities will include the Graveyard Smash Karaoke Stage, competition lawn games and a Zombie Tag Challenge, plus the event will feature unlimited “scare”ousel rides, two sea lion presentations, local food trucks, dancing and music with DJs Brothers Griiin and "spook”tacular libations served at 11 different bars across the grounds.

4. 3rd Act Theatre Company's 'Eat, Slay, Leave' 

When and where: Oct. 21-Nov. 6, Shoppes at Northpark.

The community theater continues its fourth season, which boasts the theme "Regenerate," with Heather Meyer's horror-comedy. A satirical take on self-care culture, "Eat, Slay, Leave" follows three busy 30-something women who retreat to a remote cabin but accidentally conjure up frightening supernatural forces with their misguided relaxation and rejuvenation techniques. 

5. 'SMO21: Monsters, Mutations and Mayhem'

When and where: 7 to 10 p.m. Oct. 21, Science Museum Oklahoma.

The museum's after-hours program for adults 21 and older continues with this Halloween experience that imagines "They’re Alive! There’s something seriously amiss in The Lab." Dissections, mummification, electrifying experiments and paranormal investigations are planned as scientists in various stages of transformation look for their next assistants — and subjects. Costumes are encouraged.

6. WEIRDlesque by Terre Rouge

When and where: 7 p.m. Oct. 28, Tower Theatre.

OKC's Terre Rouge Burlesque will present an experience dedicated to nerd and pop culture with a little bit of fetish sprinkled in for an extra spooky good time. The show is for ticketholders 18 and older.

7. The Boom's 'Rocky Horror Picture Show'  

When: Through Oct. 31, The Boom.

The OKC live entertainment venue's annual interactive movie experience pays homage to the 1975 film adaptation of "The Rocky Horror Show," and tickets include a meatloaf dinner.  Admission to The Boom is for people 21 and older.

8. Oklahoma ShakesFEAR in the Dark 

When and where: 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 25, a secret OKC location.

A creepy cocktail party for adults, the fundraising event for Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park will take place at a secret location in Quail Creek. Seasonal festivities will include music, performances, food and drink and a costume contest.

9. 'Halloween': An Immersive Screening

When and where: 6 p.m. Oct. 31, Rodeo Theatre in Stockyards City.

The nonprofit movie theater is showing John Carpenter's 1978 slasher classic featuring the first meeting between Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) against Michael Myers (Tony Moran) in an immersive experience that includes a special surprise during the screening.

10. Halloween with Factory Obscura

When and where: 7 to 11:59 p.m. Oct. 28, Factory Obscura's Mix-Tape.

Put on your costume and your dancing shoes for an after-hours concert and dance party at the OKC artist collective's NW Ninth Street headquarters. The event will feature live music by Blue Morrison and Em and the Mother Superiors, followed by a DJ set and dance party with Rení.
