The top Springfield employers remain the state of Illinois followed by some of its medical facilities.

No surprises there.

But who else is on the list?

Here is a breakdown of the top 10 employers in the Springfield area, with the most recent data from Springfield Sangamon Growth Alliance.

10. Blue Cross Blue Shield

Blue Cross Blue Shield has about 900 employees. BCBS is the largest health insurance company in the state, providing more than 8.1 million members with comprehensive and affordable health plans, according to the Springfield Sangamon Growth Alliance.

9. Horace Mann

Horace Mann employs 1,066 employees. Horace Mann was founded in 1945 by two Springfield teachers who saw a need for affordable auto insurance for teachers.

8. City of Springfield

The city of Springfield has 1,410 employees. Springfield has a strong education economy driven by several colleges, technical schools and universities. Also, Springfield is a regional provider of health care services

7. Southern Illinois University School of Medicine

SIU School of Medicine employs 1,470. The medical school has four areas of excellence: medical education, patient care, research and community service.

6. University of Illinois Springfield

The University of Springfield has around 1,642 employees. UIS is one of three schools in the University of Illinois system.

5. Springfield Public Schools

Springfield School District 186 employs about 2,130 people. The district's mission, according to its website, is to "develop in all students the knowledge, understanding, skills, and attitudes to empower them to be responsible lifelong learners and citizens in an ever-changing world."

4. Springfield Clinic

Springfield Clinic has about 2,449 employees. The clinic was one of the first multi-specialty medical clinics to form in downstate Illinois.

3. Hospital Sisters Health System

HSHS has around 4,434 employees. Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) is a multi-institutional health care system that cares for patients in 14 communities in Illinois and Wisconsin.

2. Memorial Health

Memorial Health employs about 5,238 people. It is one of the leading health care organizations in Illinois.

1. State of Illinois

The state of Illinois is Springfield's largest employer with about 17,800 employees. Illinois is the fifth-most populous state in the country with almost 13 million people.
