10 residents displaced by apartment house fire in Mount Penn

Apr. 11—Ten occupants of an apartment house in Mount Penn were displaced by a fire Wednesday night.

Crews were dispatched shortly before 7 p.m. after an occupant reported fire on the second floor of 21 S. 23rd St. The first crew from Mount Penn Fire Company arrived to find flames.

A second alarm was struck to draw more manpower if needed, Mount Penn Fire Chief John Theodossiou said, but the initial crew was able to quickly contain the fire to a bedroom, and most of the additional help was called off.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by Central Berks Regional police and a borough fire marshal, but all indications are it was accidental , Theodossiou said.

The American Red Cross was called to provide emergency housing to five adults and five children.
