10 Taunton area restaurants where you can celebrate National Veggie Burger Day on June 5

On June 5, why not try something plant-based?

That’s because it’s National Veggie Burger Day.

What once was a menu alternative — when you could find it, that is — more and more has become the main event, for vegans, vegetarians, and even meat eaters.

Restaurants, locally-owned and chains alike, are crafting more inclusive menus.

And they’re getting creative, finishing off their veggie burgers with flavorful toppings and packing these sandwiches with various spices.

Many restaurants are making their own veggie burgers now, usually with black beans and/or sweet potatoes, and often packed with grains for a punch of protein.

More “meaty” options are also available, like the Impossible and Beyond burgers.

However you like your burger and fries, we rounded up a list of some Taunton area restaurants where you can celebrate deliciously on National Veggie Burger Day:

Home Plate Bay Street Grill (Taunton)

  • Where: 1094 Bay St.

  • Hours: Sunday to Wednesday, 11 a.m. to midnight; Thursday and Friday, 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m. to midnight

On the menu: At Home Plate, hungry diners have their pick of veggie burgers: they offer a black bean burger and an Impossible burger. And they’ve got even more creative possibilities with the choices for toppings: there are half a dozen cheeses to choose from (if you’re a lacto-ovo vegetarian). You can also top the burgers with an egg, in any style. For more vegan-friendly options, there are toppings staples like peppers, onions, and mushrooms, or you can branch out and spice things up a bit, with choices like pineapple and banana peppers.

Smokey Bones (Taunton)

  • Where: 1023 County St.

  • Hours: Open seven days a week, 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.

On the menu: Smokey Bones has a house-made veggie burger, their “Good Seed” burger. It’s packed with chia and hemp seeds, sprouted grains, and spices. It’s served falafel-style, with lettuce, tomato, red onion, and pickles, and topped with garlic mayo and a touch of sriracha.

Stoneforge Tavern & Publick House (Raynham)

  • Where: 90 Paramount Dr.

  • Hours: Sunday, noon to 9 p.m.; Monday to Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

On the menu: The Stoneforge isn’t shy with the spice for their veggie burger. It’s made of spicy black beans, corn, and sweet potato, topped with cheddar cheese and chipotle mayo.

99 Restaurant (Taunton)

  • Where: 158 Dean St.

  • Hours: Sunday to Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Thursday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

  • Hours: Seven days a week, 6 a.m. to midnight

On the menu: While Taco Bell has been a veggie-friendly chain option for years, Burger King was among the first big chains to adopt the Impossible burger. You can have an Impossible Whopper your way, or you can get it with all the classic toppings: tomatoes, lettuce, mayo, ketchup, pickles, and onions.

Slap Shotz Gastropub (Raynham)

  • Where: 524 Broadway

  • Hours: Saturday and Sunday, noon to 1 a.m.; Monday to Thursday, 4 p.m. to midnight; Friday, 3 p.m. to 1 a.m.

The Jockey Club (Raynham)

  • Where: 115 New State Highway

  • Hours: Sunday, 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Monday to Wednesday, 3 to 10 p.m.; Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.

On the menu: How about a patty melt? At The Jockey Club, they’ve got an Impossible Melt Burger, with American cheese, fried onions, and thousand island dressing, served on brioche.

Barrels & Boards (Raynham)

  • Where: 1285 Broadway

  • Hours: Sunday, noon to 11 p.m.; Monday to Wednesday, 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Thursday to Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to midnight

On the menu: The special sauce on Barrels & Boards’ sweet potato black bean burger is a cilantro garlic aioli. It’s served with sliced avocado, lettuce, tomato, and red onion, on a brioche bun.

Mac & Walt’s (Norton)

  • Where: 363 Old Colony Rd.

  • Hours: Sunday, noon to 8 p.m.; Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, noon to 9 p.m.; Friday, noon to 10 p.m.; Saturday, 1 to 10 p.m.; Closed Tuesday

On the menu: Where’s the beef? Not in Mac & Walt’s “Where’s The Beef” burger. Their vegetarian option is a house-made black bean burger, served with lettuce, tomato, onion, guacamole, and pepper jack cheese. They’ve also got a build-your-own section on the menu, where you can choose a black bean patty and choose your own sauce, as well as from several tiers of toppings. There are complimentary toppings like ketchup, onions, or lettuce. Then the toppings tiers are 50 cents, $1, $2, and $3, with the options getting progressively more interesting.

Harry’s Bar & Grille (Middleboro)

  • Where: 407 W. Grove St.

  • Hours: Seven days a week, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

On the menu: At Harry’s, every burger can be a veggie burger if you want it to be! You can substitute a plant-based patty for any of their signature burgers, and you can also build your own, with fun toppings like dill pickle chips, roasted red peppers, or feta cheese.
