10 things to do in the Coachella Valley this week, May 7-13

There are always plenty of things to do in the Coachella Valley (and in nearby communities). We've put together a list of events and entertainment happening this week.

Palm Springs Vintage Market

Looking to step into the past? This market features a slew of vendors selling authentic antiques that range from mid-century modern to vintage Americana. There will also be upcycled and other retro merchandise available for purchase, as well as food and entertainment to enjoy, and it all takes place outside the Palm Springs Cultural Center.

When: 7-8 a.m. ("first pick" admission) and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, May 7

Palm Springs Hot Rodeo

The last day to catch the intense rodeo is Sunday. Riders will compete in various events that include bull and steer riding, roping and other rodeo competitions. There is also a "Wild Drag Race" where a team of three lead a steer to a finish line and the team member mounting the steer will be dressed in drag. Food and beverage vendors are available on site to keep attendees refreshed.

When: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 7 (gates open 9:30 a.m.)

Secret Movie Club: '2001: A Space Odyssey'

The Los Angeles-based Secret Movie Club comes to Palm Springs this week, where it'll be screening "2001: A Space Odyssey" on Sunday. The movie will be shown on 70mm film at the Camelot Theatre, a venue most fit for the occasion. Cinephiles will get to experience the classic science fiction movie directed by Stanley Kubrick in all of its glory.

When: 2-5 p.m. Sunday, May 7

Sunday Brunch with Las Tías

Maleza is a restaurant in Drift Palm Springs and has a brunch offering every weekend. On the first Sunday of every month, they have a guest appearance from local band Las Tías.

For every first Sunday of the month, local musicians Las Tías will be performing at Maleza, the Mexican restaurant at the Drift Palm Springs hotel, during the restaurant's brunch offering. The band consists of Giselle Woo and Janine Rivera, and their music is imbued with Mexican American inspirations. The restaurant will offer brunch cocktails along with their Baja-style cuisine, which includes the Bloody Maria, their version of the signature Bloody Mary. There will be indoor seating options as well as an outdoor patio with a view of the hotel's pool.

When: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, May 7 (every first Sunday of the month)

Concerts in the Park: We Belong

This free Palm Desert concert series will run every Thursday throughout May. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets, but you don't have to carry anything to the park if you want to spend the whole time dancing. Whether you picnic or not, there will be food trucks available an hour before the show starts. This week's music offering is We Belong, a tribute band to Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo.

2023 Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival

This film festival begins on Thursday with a screening of the 1956 movie "The Killing." The four-day event will feature a broad mix of screenings, from noir classics to esoteric films from the noir era. There will even be special guests for some showings, including James B. Harris for "The Killing," David Ladd for "This Gun For Hire" and Nicholas Von Sternberg and Victoria Mature for "The Shanghai Gesture."

Films in the Gardens: 'The Hundred-Foot Journey'

When Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) and his family move from India to a village in the South of France, they open a restaurant and encounter Madame Mallory, (Academy Award-winner Helen Mirren) the chef proprietress of a classical Michelin-starred French restaurant across the street. Cultures collide, but they eventually find common ground through their love of cooking, in DreamWorks Pictures’ charming film, “The Hundred-Foot Journey.” Based on the novel “The Hundred-Foot Journey” by Richard C. Morais, the film will be discussed as part of the symposium The Power of Words: Book To Screen through the Palm Springs International Film Festival Jan. 7 and Jan. 8.

A series of three Friday night movie screenings at the Sunnylands Center and Gardens kicks off this week. The film will be projected on the Great Lawn where attendees are encouraged to bring their own picnic chairs and blankets. You can bring your own snacks and beverages, but large coolers and alcohol are not allowed at the event. Every film showed on these Friday night events are culinary themed. This week's movie is "The Hundred-Foot Journey," which is about an Indian family that moves to France and opens a restaurant across the street from the Michelin-starred Madame Mallory's.

When: 7 p.m. Friday, May 12 (movie starts 8 p.m.)

Cascade Nights

Work weeks are long, and sometimes there's just nothing better than losing yourself on the dance floor while wearing your boldest outfit — it's a great way to relieve stress. So, if you want to spend your weekend dancing to club hits and a mix of dance music, consider checking out Agua Caliente Casinos' Cascade Nights, which are held every Friday and Saturday. DJ Gemini Nikki plays on Friday nights and DJ Lady Kate plays on Saturday nights. There is a strict dress code policy, but sparkly button shirts are encouraged.

Psychic / Healing Arts Fair

Crystal Fantasy, a shop for metaphysical goods, is hosting a weekend fair where a group of healers and readers can provide various spiritual services to patrons. Eventgoers can get a palm reading, tarot and oracle card reading, spiritual counseling and more. All the services will be done for free, but they encourage donations.

When: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday
