10 Things We Learned From the New 'Captain Marvel' Images
We’ve officially entered Captain Marvel season with an onslaught of awesome new photos from the upcoming Marvel Studios film.
On Wednesday, Entertainment Weekly revealed an epic cover story all about Captain Marvel including everyone’s first official look as Brie Larson in the role. But EW also shared a series of Captain Marvel photos that showed everything from Carol’s allies in Starforce and her mentor Mar-vell. We also get to see what the shapeshifting Skrulls look like in their natural form.
Here are the 10 new images released by Entertainment Weekly, along with plenty of details:
Carol Danvers Suited-Up as Captain Marvel
Alongside the Entertainment Weekly cover photo, this is the best look at Brie Larson in costume. She looks quite angry here, so it's possible this happens either right before or during some fight.
Meet Starforce, the "SEAL Team Six of space"
When Captain Marvel starts, Carol joins up with Starforce, an "elite military team ... on the Kree planet of Hala." According to Entertainment Weekly, directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck call it the "SEAL Team Six of space." Here, Carol is flanked by Korath (Djimon Hounsou) the Pursuer -- whom fans might recognize from Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 1 -- along with Minn-Erva (Gemma Chan) and two other characters that haven't been officially named just yet.
They're walking towards Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace), the villain from Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 1. Marvel announced that both Ronan and Korath were returning in Captain Marvel back in March
Jude Law Plays Mar-Vell, Carol's Mentor
Jude Law's Mar-Vell is the commander of Starforce and he supposedly views Captain Marvel as both a "mentee" and "pet project." According to Law, Mar-Vell "sees [Carol's powers] as something of a blessing and something that she has to learn how to control," adding that motif in Captain Marvel is "the element of learning to control one’s emotions and to use your powers wisely.” It's starting to sound like Carol is quite the hothead.
Could her brash actions lead to the death of her squad, including Mar-Vell? This seems likely, because it also sounds like Danvers returns to Earth in the latter half of the movie to combat a Skrull invasion.
The Shapeshifting Skrulls Invade Earth
Cue the boy band jokes, because these green, shapeshifting aliens are loving this beach scenery. Ben Mendelsohn's Talos leads the pack here. If we had to guess, maybe they crash-land in the ocean and wade ashore where they go on to assume human forms?

Ben Mendelsohn might look mean and green when he's in Talos' natural Skrull form, but the shapeshifting alien easily passes as a human -- and he does it so well that he's able to infiltrate S.H.I.E.LD. Here he is standing with Captain Marvel directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden for a behind-the-scenes photo.
Mar-Vell and Ronan the Accuser Seem Like Allies
Ronan the Accuser doesn't become a racist jerk until around two decades after Captain Marvel, so it seems like Mar-Vell and Starforce could be working with or for him in the movie. Ronan is supposedly "still a high-ranking member of Kree society."
Carol Danvers Dressed in Regular Clothes Is '90s-AF
Carol Danvers totally dressed for the '90s during Captain Marvel, as evidenced by her Nine Inch Nails shirt. The logo on her hat is the classic S.H.I.E.L.D. symbol, so perhaps she works very closely with the organization when she returns to Earth.
Young Nick Fury's Bad Eye Is Already Bad in 'Captain Marvel'
Marvel Studios' de-aging technology is starting to get robust-AF, because Samuel L. Jackson looks way better here than any of the young Pyms or Van Dynes we've seen in the two 'Ant-Man' movies. Jackson’s ninth appearance as Fury shows him at his youngest during the '90s, before he lost his eye and gained an eye patch. EW calls him a "lowly S.H.I.E.L.D. desk jockey," so working with Captain Marvel probably becomes the boost his career needs.
Also: What's up the wound above his left eye? That's the same eye he's bound to lose at some point during Captain Marvel, so why would he injure it already during the movie and not fully lose it? It seems a bit strange.
Carol Danvers Is an Accomplished Air Force Pilot, But We Might Not See Any of That
Brie Larson spent time with actual Air Force pilots while researching the role, but if the film starts with Carol Danvers going away with Starforce after she's already got her powers, then we might never really see her "normal" life.
Captain Marvel Could Low-Key Introduce Monica Rambeau, Another Superhero
In Captain Marvel, Lashana Lynch plays Maria Rambeau, the Goose to Carol's Maverick. She's one of Carol's oldest and closest friends. Her callsign is "Photon." EW also reveals that she's a "single mother to a young daughter."
Well guess what: In Marvel Comics, a Maria Rambeau has a daughter named Monica whose superpowers are so close to Captain Marvel's that at one point she even assumed the mantle. This could ultimately mean that in the present day of Avengers 4, Monica is around 30-years-old. What might that mean for the future of the MCU?
Captain Marvel will be released in theaters March 8, 2019.
