10 things about Stockton Civic Theatre and ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’

Stockton Civic Theatre kicked off its 71st season with the musical "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels."

1.The plot revolves around two con artists working in the south of France, challenge each other to a loser gets out of town proposition. But who really loses when a double cross turns into a triple cross?

2. You’ll see SCT favorites: Kyle Beal, Cindy Braden, Cole Bryant, Chelsea Carrusco, Brad DeMoss, and Sierra Fraser. Directed by Mike Kiley.

3. You won’t get Fraser’s squeal out of your ears for days.

4. Show features a 20-member cast, 20 musical numbers and runs about 2½ hours with a 20-minute intermission

5. Steve Martin and Michael Caine starred in the 1988 comedy film, which was a remake of a 1964 film starring Marlon Brando and David Niven, which was later made into 2019 film starring Anne Hathway and Rebel Wilson.

6. You will see more of Kyle Beal than you ever imagined.

7. Wednesday performances have been moved to Thursdays. Four days of shows gives more momentum, Dennis Beasley, artistic director said.

8. September is rotten for Stockton Civic Theatre. About a year ago SCT opened after a COVID-19 shutdown with “the show: Something Rotten!”

9. Maybe not rotten but worrisome. Since January SCT has canceled three full performances because of COVID, said Dennis Beasley, artistic director. Attendance, he added, continues to be down about 20-30 percent, Beasley said. “It’s kind of a perfect storm, people are traveling more, inflation and still some people are in COVID mode (and not going out.)”
