I-10 traffic near future Buc-ee’s site could back-up for hours again, MDOT warns

Traffic clogged again Thursday on Interstate 10 in Harrison County during a week of delays and lane closures near the construction site of the future Buc-ee’s Travel Center.

By Thursday morning, the Mississippi Department of Transportation had already warned drivers to expect “major delays” in westbound lanes at the Menge Avenue exit that could last one hour and 30 minutes.

The warnings came just before crews closed the westbound left lane Thursday to work on the exit’s overhead bridge deck. That closure will last from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., MDOT said.

Traffic also slowed Thursday morning in eastbound lanes at DeLisle and Pass Christian Exit 20.

The delays are the second this week. On Tuesday, MDOT warned of hours-long back-ups until traffic near the Buc-ee’s site finally cleared by 4 p.m.

MDOT also warned drivers to expect interstate delays near Lorraine Cowan Road and County Farm Road, where shoulder work will lead to intermittemt lane closures between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

The construction and congestion at Menge Avenue has persisted since July 2023. It is part part of a $15 million interchange project that includes a new overpass and widened exit and entrance ramps for the new Buc-ee’s that will soon open at the exit.
